Common Fix In Popcorn Ceiling Repair

Whether you live in Marietta, GA or somewhere else in the country, if you’ve got a popcorn ceiling, it’s a good idea to be well versed in popcorn ceiling repair, just in case any issues arise. One common problem is water damage due to leaks, which can be particularly problematic in areas above the bathroom or the laundry room. Luckily, just as popcorn ceilings are cheap and easy to apply, they aren’t too difficult to fix either. Just follow the steps below, and you’ll be performing your own popcorn ceiling repair in no time.

Fix Water Damage Stains

  • Scraper

  • Wallboard tape
  • Primer

  • Texture additive
  • Newspapers

    1.Select the correct texture additive product to suit your ceiling. It’s important to pick a texture additive that matches your ceiling, so that the repaired area will look consistent with the rest of the ceiling.

    2.Sand or scrape off all of the popcorn ceiling textures that have been damaged or loosened by the water. Be very careful when doing this, because it’s difficult to tell the difference between water loosened parts and the normal parts. You should be gently removing these segments, because if you aren’t careful, the whole strip can be scraped off.

    3.Repair holes in the ceiling. Before doing so, you must sand off any bumps or touch spots in the areas surrounding the holes. This is so you won’t end up with lumps when you place the walboard tape over the holes. Once these areas are smooth, apply wallboard tape over the holes.

    4.Apply primer to the area you’re repairing with the brush. Note, if the rest of the ceiling is not painted, prime the entire ceiling as well.

    5. Test your texture additive, by mixing some of it with water, and then painting it onto paper or plywood. Compare the results with the texture of your ceiling. It’s important that they match. Tip: you want to add the texture additive to the water until it’s thick, but still fluid. Apply a small portion of the texture additive to the ceiling. Compare it to the rest of the ceiling. If it does not look like it matches, wipe off the texture additive quickly, and try altering your mixture until you’ve discovered the correct mix.

    6.Cover the wall and floor with newspapers, and you are ready to apply the texture additive, which will complete this popcorn ceiling repair job. Use the roller to apply the additive to the ceiling. You’ll want to use a brush for the areas close to the wall, because a roller is not fine-tuned enough for this part of the job. Tip: feather out the texture about 6 inches out from the repair area to give it a more seamless look.

    7.Allow to dry, and then evaluate your job. If the repaired area is not as thick as you’d like, add another thin layer of texture additive. Once you are satisfied, you can paint the repaired area or ceiling with acrylic paint. This should complete your adventure in popcorn ceiling repair.
